Powder Coating: Why You Should Want It
Midstate Burglar Bars & Ironworks is proud to now offer powder coating. What is powder coating? Powder coating is an advanced method of applying a decorative and protective finish to virtually any type of metal that can be used both by industry and consumers. It has been around since the 1960s and is used on a wide variety of products.

Powder coating represents about 16% of the total industrial finishing market. It is quickly becoming the preferred method for consumers to not only protect their metal items, but to add a decorative touch as well. Powder coating provides a uniform, durable, high quality and attractive finish.

How It Works

As stated above, Powder coating is an advanced method of applying a decorative and protective finish to virtually any type of metal that can be used both by industry and consumers. The powder used in the process is a mixture of finely ground particles of pigment and resin, which electrostatically sprayed onto the surface to be coated. The charged powder particles adhere to the electronically grounded surfaces until the powder is heated and fused into a smooth coating in the curing oven.

Why Not Just Spray Paint It?

Nothing is going to give you that shiny, uniform wash of color like powder coating. Also, powder coating gives you such a durable finish. Spray painting cannot even compare. Because the coating is heat-cured, the final product is smooth and thick. It's very important to protect your outside metal with powder coating because of its durability. Spray paint will not last through the elements like powder coating will.

Cost Effective

The greatest benefit of powder coating is the efficiency. The average transfer efficiency of powder coating is 60-70%. You might think that losing 30-40% of the powder when spraying is a large amount, but keep in mind that the transfer efficiency spray paint is only 30-35%, losing 65-70%. And with powder coating, any overspray is collected and reused, leaving very little to no waste.

Environmentally Friendly

There are many environmental advantages to powder coating as well. Since there are no solvents or volatile organic compounds (VOCs), there is no damage done to the environment when the powder coating is applied. Conventional paint contains chemicals that are harmful to the environment including ozone depletion and producing hazardous waste.

Durability

As previously stated, powder coating provides a protective finish that is much more durable than conventional paint. Because of the high cross-link density created by powder coating, the molecular chains are harder to breakdown, making the finish harder and more durable. Powder coating protects some of the biggest industrial machinery as well as household items that you use on a daily basis.

Takeaway

Powder coating is tough, looks great and will last a long time. Powder coating comes in a variety of colors, can be cost effective and environmentally friendly. It's important to protect the metal around your house and powder coating is the best way to do this.
